Boston Seo announces that ‘True Blood’ Star Nelsan Ellis Dies at 39

Nelsan Ellis — famous for his role as Lafayette Reynolds on HBO’s “True Blood” — has passed away at age 39.

Born in Harvey, III. In 1977. At 17, he joined the Marines. He studies at Ilinois State University.

“The studies were so intense and the institution is so white, and I’m a black man from the South with a very specific vernacular and palate,” he recalled to Backstage in 2009. “I felt like an alien, and I struggled the first couple of years. But it transformed who I am as an actor and a person.”

The actor died after complications from heart failure.

Ellis appeared in numerous film and TV shows, including The SoloistThe ButlerGet On Up and Elementary.
